First trip to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares in Argentina (second to the Perito Merino Glacier – this time with the “alternate tour“). I based myself in El Chalten for 8 days and had pretty ordinary weather the entire time (though everyone kept telling me that the week before had been perfect). Didn’t stop me doing almost every day walk in the region as well as heading up to Lago Desierto (you can do all the day walks by yourself – they are very clear). All the walks are beautiful with Laguna Torre and Laguna Los Tres the most popular. But don’t forget Sendero Loma del Pliegue Tumbado – it is less popular but absolutely stunning.
Also went ice-climbing on the Viedma glacier – if you are trying to decide between the ice-hike and the ice-climb … do the ice-climb. You have to ice-hike out to the climbs anyway and by climbing you really get up close and personal with the glacier.
El Chalten is an awesome place and I can’t wait to return. Got my eye on doing the 8 day hike around the entire massif including several days on the Patagonian icecap.
Highly recommended:
El Calafate
Accommodation: Hostels & Suites del Glaciar
El Chalten
Accommodation: Hosteria el Paraiso
Eating: La Senyera for traditional food, Como Vaca for awesome steak, La Vineria for the cheese platter.

A very special place!
I worked at the European Southern Observatory’s older installation in Chile as a support astronomer between 2000 and 2004. These photos were taken in 2015 when a few of us had a mini-reunion in one of our favourite places. It was awesome being back on the mountain – but sad as well. I think all of us hold a very special place in our heart for La Silla Observatory and would come back in a heartbeat.
